Closes #265

Root cause

Migration 000053 made purchase_executions.cloud_account_id ON DELETE RESTRICT, so the FK refuses the delete for every referencing row, whatever its status. The deleteAccount preflight only counts pending/notified rows. An account with one completed, failed, canceled or expired execution passed the preflight, hit the FK, and got a 409 saying "pending purchase(s) must be canceled first" when there was nothing to cancel. CleanupOldExecutions never purges failed rows, so the account could never be deleted through the API.

Reproduced on origin/main (173474e) against real Postgres: DeleteCloudAccount returned SQLSTATE 23503 for an account whose only execution was in each of the 7 terminal statuses.

Fix

  • config.TerminalExecutionStatuses (new allowlist): completed, partially_completed, failed, canceled, cancelled, expired, revocation_requested. It is an allowlist on purpose, so a status added to the schema later counts as live and blocks the delete until someone classifies it. A new integration test (TestTerminalExecutionStatuses_CoverSchema) fails if the terminal and live lists stop matching the purchase_executions_status_check constraint exactly.
  • DeleteCloudAccount detaches the account's terminal executions (SET cloud_account_id = NULL WHERE cloud_account_id = $1 AND status = ANY(terminal)) inside its existing transaction, just before the DELETE. Live rows stay attached, so the RESTRICT FK still refuses the delete while any are left, and the detach rolls back along with it.
  • New CountLiveExecutionsForAccount counts the account's rows with status <> ALL(terminal). deleteAccount now runs its preflight in preflightAccountDelete:
    1. pending/notified rows: the existing fix(migrations): enforce cancellation and timeout on the real migration runner #606 409 (reason: pending_executions, pending_count, pending_execution_ids). The Cancel-All-Then-Delete UX is unchanged.
    2. Any other live row (approved, running, scheduled, paused): a new 409 with reason: active_executions and active_count. Its message says to wait for them to finish, or revoke or delete them, not to cancel them. The frontend shows it through its generic error toast, so no frontend change is needed.
  • Corrected the 000053 test comment that said the Cancel-All flow deletes execution rows.

Retention semantics

  • Terminal execution rows are kept. Status, recommendations (with their per-rec cloud_account_id), amounts and audit stamps are untouched. Only the row-level cloud_account_id becomes NULL. That matches what purchase_history, savings_snapshots and ri_exchange_history already get from their ON DELETE SET NULL FKs, and it is what this FK did before 000053 tightened it for live rows.
  • A live (non-terminal) execution still blocks the delete: first in the preflight with a clear 409, then at the FK if one races in. In-flight executions are never orphaned.
  • A detached failed row can still be sent to retry, but the retry cannot buy anywhere else. Its recommendations still name the deleted account, so the executor fails it before submission (credential resolution failed ... account not found, fix(server): exclude uninitialized replicas from readiness #646) and never falls back to ambient credentials.
  • revocation_requested counts as terminal: the system does nothing further with it (the revocation is an AWS support case), and no code moves a row out of it, so blocking on it would bring this bug back for those accounts.

Migration 000128

000128_executions_detach_keeps_updated_at: the shared update_updated_at_column() trigger would stamp NOW() on every detached row. Several readers treat updated_at as a lifecycle clock: CountExecutionsByPlanAndStatus windows the plan health score's failed/canceled counts on it, and CleanupOldExecutions ages canceled rows by it. Deleting an account would then pull its old failures back into each plan's health window and restart retention on its canceled rows. The migration gives purchase_executions its own trigger function. It keeps OLD.updated_at when the only change in an UPDATE is cloud_account_id going from a value to NULL, and stamps NOW() on every other UPDATE as before. The whole-row comparison only runs inside the detach branch.

Verification

All tests ran with AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE=/dev/null. No cloud calls.

  • Real-Postgres integration (testcontainers), internal/config/store_postgres_delete_account_integration_test.go:
    • TestDeleteCloudAccount_TerminalExecutionsAreDetached, one subtest per terminal status: the delete succeeds, the row survives with its status, cloud_account_id is NULL and updated_at is unchanged. Fails on origin/main (SQLSTATE 23503 for all 7) and passes with this change.
    • TestDeleteCloudAccount_LiveExecutionBlocks, one subtest per live status: the count is 1, the delete fails with 23503, the account survives, and both the live row and a sibling failed row stay attached (the transaction rolls back whole).
    • TestDeleteCloudAccount_DetachIsScopedToAccount, TestCountLiveExecutionsForAccount, TestTerminalExecutionStatuses_CoverSchema.
  • Handler unit tests: TestDeleteAccount_ActiveExecutions_Returns409, _PendingTakesPrecedenceOverActive, _OnlyTerminalExecutions_Deletes, _LiveCountErr_Returns500. Three of these fail against the origin/main handler. The existing fix(migrations): enforce cancellation and timeout on the real migration runner #606 tests still pass unchanged.
  • pgxmock: the DeleteCloudAccount tests now expect the detach with exactly TerminalExecutionStatuses, plus new tests for a failed detach (rollback) and for CountLiveExecutionsForAccount.
  • Mutation probes, 9/9 killed: detach removed; detach of every status; detach not scoped to the account; live count using = ANY; running classified as terminal; expired left unclassified; trigger always bumping; trigger skipping the row diff; down migration leaving the function.
  • These pass: go build ./..., go vet ./..., go vet -tags integration ./..., and unit tests for internal/{config,api,mocks,server,analytics} and internal/database/postgres/migrations (which includes TestMigrationsAreTransactional).
  • Full integration suites pass: go test -tags integration ./internal/config/ and ./internal/database/postgres/migrations/. In the migrations run, one test hit a testcontainers start-up error once (port "5432/tcp" not found) while other jobs were running at the same time; it passed when re-run on its own.
  • golangci-lint v2.10.1 (--allow-parallel-runners, with and without --build-tags integration): 0 issues. gocyclo -over 10 on the changed non-test files: none. git-secrets --scan on the changed files in a temp clone with an isolated HOME: clean. scripts/test-git-secrets-allowlist.sh: 42 PASS.
  • Not covered: no real-account or deployed-environment check (no cloud calls), and no browser check of the account page's new 409 toast.

Out of scope / interactions

  • fix(config): deleting a cloud account leaves its scoped plans enabled with zero accounts #264 (deleting an account leaves its scoped plans enabled) is not fixed here. This change lets more accounts be deleted, so that state is reachable more often, but it does not change what happens to plans: plan_accounts rows still cascade, and plans keep their current enabled state. One interaction to know about: the ramp-step unit CTE (store_postgres_ramp_step.go) treats rows with no account as root rows. While any account row is left on a step it ignores them, so detaching changes nothing there. If every account on a fanned-out plan is deleted (the fix(config): deleting a cloud account leaves its scoped plans enabled with zero accounts #264 state), the detached children join the step's root row in its NULL partition. ever_bought is unchanged (the root already aggregates its children), and because 000128 keeps updated_at, the representative row is picked on the original write times.
  • History rows that lost their account show it the way other NULL-account rows do. The per-rec cloud_account_id is still in recommendations, but nothing resolves a deleted account's name.
  • No frontend change: the new active_executions 409 shows through the existing generic error toast.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Account deletion is now blocked when non-terminal executions are still active, with a conflict response indicating the active count.
    • Accounts can be deleted when only terminal executions remain. Those execution records are retained as history without their account association.
    • Pending-execution conflicts continue to take precedence over active-execution conflicts.

Migration 000053 made purchase_executions.cloud_account_id ON DELETE
RESTRICT, so one completed/failed/canceled/expired execution blocked
the account delete forever, and the handler answered with a 409 asking
the operator to cancel pending purchases that did not exist.

DeleteCloudAccount now detaches the account's terminal executions
(cloud_account_id = NULL, status in the new TerminalExecutionStatuses
allowlist) in its transaction before the DELETE, keeping them as
history. Live rows stay attached, so the FK still refuses the delete.
The deleteAccount preflight adds CountLiveExecutionsForAccount and
answers a 409 with reason "active_executions" for approved, running,
scheduled or paused rows, after the existing pending/notified 409.

Migration 000127 gives purchase_executions its own updated_at trigger
that keeps updated_at on a detach-only UPDATE, so deleting an account
does not pull old failures back into the plan health window or
restart the retention clock of canceled rows.

📝 Walkthrough

Account deletion now distinguishes pending, other live, and terminal executions. The API returns conflicts for pending or live executions. The PostgreSQL store detaches terminal execution references before deleting the account, preserves their updated_at, and retains foreign-key restrictions for live executions.

Changes: Account deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Terminal status and timestamp rules
internal/config/types.go, internal/database/postgres/migrations/000128_*
The terminal status list includes revocation-requested executions. The migration preserves updated_at for detach-only updates and restores the shared timestamp trigger on rollback. Migration tests cover detach and other update cases.
PostgreSQL account deletion
internal/config/interfaces.go, internal/config/store_postgres.go, internal/config/store_postgres_delete_account_integration_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_pgxmock_test.go, internal/database/postgres/migrations/000053_*
The store counts live executions and detaches terminal executions before deleting an account. Tests cover live-execution restrictions, terminal-history retention, account scoping, count results, and transaction errors.
Account deletion preflight
internal/api/handler_accounts.go, internal/api/handler_accounts_test.go, internal/mocks/stores.go, internal/analytics/collector_test.go, internal/server/test_helpers_test.go
The API checks pending executions before other live executions. It returns the corresponding conflict response or proceeds with deletion. Tests and mocks cover the preflight results and store errors.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 510ea

Account deletion is broadly ready, but a rare concurrent change can still produce misleading cancellation instructions. Correct the conflict response or accept that bounded operator-facing gap before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 510ea

Active purchases remain protected by the deletion transaction and database constraint. However, clearing a historical execution’s account can cause its details to be authorized against other accounts remaining on the same plan, creating a cross-account disclosure risk.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Detaching a terminal per-account plan execution removes the identity used by history authorization. Before detachment, executionAccounts checks the execution’s own account A. After cloud_account_id becomes NULL, it checks all current accounts of the plan instead. If that plan retains account B, a caller scoped to B but not A can pass the details endpoint’s scope check and receive A’s retained recommendations, costs, and execution details. The new detach operation makes this authorization-state change reachable; the merge-base deletion was blocked by the referencing execution. Deletion authorization and executor credential guards do not prevent this read-side reattribution.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified disclosure risk is bounded to retained terminal plan-execution data whose deleted account loses its row-level attribution. A reader needs purchase-view permission, an execution ID, and scope covering the plan’s remaining accounts. The inspected path does not establish cross-deployment access, credential disclosure, or additional cloud-purchase authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — After an authorized operator deletes account A from a plan that still contains B, a B-scoped reader can request a known terminal child execution formerly attributed to A. The details handler checks the current scope through executionAccounts and then returns the unchanged recommendation snapshot and financial details. This is the newly inferred concern; the supplied Security section contains no retained findings.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The strongest execution-side counterevidence is independent account attribution: recommendation-level account IDs survive retry, missing attributed accounts fail credential resolution, and scoped lineage prevents a detached plan child from becoming a fresh fan-out across remaining accounts. These controls address cloud submission, not the history-read scope decision.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The terminal classification is an allowlist: unclassified statuses are counted as live and are not detached. Combined with the restrictive foreign key and transaction rollback, this preserves fail-closed deletion behavior for attached live executions even when preflight races.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate immutable historical account attribution from the nullable live-account reference, and use that historical identity for retained execution authorization rather than interpreting every detached child as a plan root.

Explanation

Issue #265 requires terminal executions to stop blocking account deletion, live executions to remain attached and blocking, and the misleading migration-test comment to be corrected. The PR adds the terminal allowlist, detaches matching rows inside the existing delete transaction, and counts non-terminal rows with status <> ALL(TerminalExecutionStatuses). The handler preserves the pending/notified 409 and adds an active_executions 409 for other live rows. Integration, handler, pgxmock, status-coverage, and migration tests cover these behaviors. The 000053 test comment is corrected.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support issue #265. The handler refactoring preserves the existing #606 pending-execution behavior. The new interface, mocks, tests, terminal-status allowlist, and migration trigger preserve required delete and retention behavior. Migration 000128 and its renumbering support the detach semantics and migration ordering. No unrelated product behavior or data deletion is introduced.

Independent review verdict: CLEAN at 6fd7d9f

Reviewer: fresh Claude agent (Sonnet, high effort), not the author, cold brief, focused on data loss and migration safety. The PR body was treated as a claim. Coordinator: claude-cc-reviewer.

Blocking findings: none. No execution or audit row is ever deleted.

What an account delete does to each referencing table:

Table On delete
account_credentials, account_service_overrides, plan_accounts (000011:55,81,115), recommendations_cache (000030), ladder_configs (000079) CASCADE (unchanged)
purchase_history, savings_snapshots, ri_exchange_history, account_registrations, aws_bastion_id SET NULL (unchanged)
purchase_executions RESTRICT (000053). This PR detaches terminal rows (cloud_account_id = NULL) in the same transaction before the DELETE. Live rows stay attached, so the FK still refuses the delete.

Terminal statuses (TerminalExecutionStatuses, an allowlist): completed, partially_completed, failed, canceled, cancelled, expired, revocation_requested. Approved, running, scheduled, paused, pending, notified and any future status count as live.

Concurrency:

  • The detach and the DELETE share one transaction (store_postgres.go ~:3878).
  • A concurrent execution insert takes a FK key-share lock, so the DELETE blocks or fails with 23503, which maps to 409.
  • A row that turns live mid-statement is re-evaluated on its new status.
  • No race was found that orphans an in-flight execution.

Migration 000127:

  • Main tops out at 000126, so there is no collision.
  • It is a BEFORE UPDATE trigger on purchase_executions that keeps OLD.updated_at only when the sole change is cloud_account_id going to NULL. A detach therefore doesn't count as a lifecycle event for health scoring or retention.
  • It is idempotent, the down migration restores the 000001 trigger, and there is no table rewrite.

Question for the owner (non-blocking): revocation_requested counts as terminal. On main it only records the user's refund intent; the AWS revocation itself is a manual support case (handler_purchases.go:1872-1876), so no automated process depends on the account link. But once an account is deleted with an open revocation request, the execution loses its account reference. Is the AWS account ID still recoverable elsewhere on the row (e.g. its recommendations payload) for whoever files the support case? If not, consider treating revocation_requested as live so such accounts can't be deleted until the revocation is resolved. @cristim

What was attacked and how:

  • go vet ./internal/... is clean. go test -race -count=1 ./internal/api/... ./internal/config/... passes.
  • -tags integration -v on config and migrations, against Docker Postgres for real: 93 PASS, 0 FAIL, 0 SKIP, ending at migration version 127.
  • Mutation probes, both killed:
    • Adding "running" to the terminal set fails TestDeleteCloudAccount_LiveExecutionBlocks/running.
    • Deleting executions instead of detaching them gives 11 failures, including the integration TerminalExecutionsAreDetached tests.
  • Fail-before: a compile failure, since the interface method is new.

Merge-order note from the #1022 review: this PR adds migration 000127, and #1022 adds 000128. The runner is golang-migrate (migrations/migrate.go:62, m.Up()), which only applies versions above the DB's current one. This PR must merge before #1022, or 000127 will be silently skipped on databases that already ran 000128. Otherwise renumber whichever lands second. (claude-cc-reviewer)

Merge driver note: #905 (head 8c0123d) now also adds migration 000127 (000127_never_started_legacy_ramps_to_new). If #905 merges first, this PR must renumber 000127_executions_detach_keeps_updated_at to 000128, and #1022 its 000128_recommendations_state_partial to 000129, before either can merge.

#905 merged (8832fb0) with migration 000127_never_started_legacy_ramps_to_new. This PR's 000127_executions_detach_keeps_updated_at must be renumbered to 000128 before it can merge (and #1022's 000128 to 000129), otherwise golang-migrate sees a duplicate version.

Merge driver status (claude-cc-pr-merge, 2026-10-17T15:25:27Z): code gate met, merge BLOCKED on the author: migration 000127 is now taken by #905 (merged 8832fb0), so 000127_executions_detach_keeps_updated_at must be renumbered to 000128; the review verdict is clean otherwise.

…loud#905

LeanerCloud#905 merged its own 000127 (never_started_legacy_ramps_to_new), so this
PR's migration moves to 000128. The down step in its test now targets the
real predecessor instead of a hard-coded 126.

Migration version collision (found while merging #1054, claude-cc-reviewer). #905 merged to main as 8832fb0 and added 000127_never_started_legacy_ramps_to_new. This PR also adds 000127_executions_detach_keeps_updated_at. golang-migrate refuses duplicate versions, and it would skip a lower number applied after a higher one. Please renumber this PR to 000128, and move #1022 from 000128 to 000129. Keep the order: #1020 merges before #1022.

Renumbered for #905. 5163215 merges origin/main (no conflicts), and 510ea41 renames the migration and its test to 000128_executions_detach_keeps_updated_at. It also updates the references in the SQL header, the test and the store_postgres.go comment. The test's down step now migrates to previousMigrationVersion(t, 128) instead of a hard-coded 126, so it undoes only this migration and not #905's 000127.

Verification at 510ea41:

  • The full internal/database/postgres/migrations integration suite passes on testcontainers Postgres (130s), so the whole chain applies with no duplicate version.
  • go build, go vet (including -tags integration), the internal/config and internal/mocks tests, and golangci-lint (0 issues) are clean.

The PR body is updated. #1022 is next (000128 → 000129).

LeanerCloud#905 merged 000127 and LeanerCloud#1020 moves to 000128, so this PR's migration

When DeleteCloudAccount hits SQLSTATE 23503 because a row raced past the
preflight, re-query so the client gets the structured pending (with
counts) or active 409 for that row. Fall back to the bare pending 409 if
the re-query fails or no longer sees a blocker (CodeRabbit on LeanerCloud#1020).

Addressed CodeRabbit's handler_accounts.go finding in 29fc68a. After a 23503 race, deleteAccount now re-runs preflightAccountDelete. If that returns a client error, the client gets it: the pending 409 with pending_count (and ids when the list call works), or the active_executions 409 when the row that raced in is approved, running, scheduled or paused. Previously that second case was mislabeled as pending. If the re-query fails or no longer sees a blocker, the bare pending 409 is kept as before.

New tests in internal/api/handler_accounts_test.go:

  • TestDeleteAccount_FKViolationRace_RequeriesPreflight covers pending and active rows that raced in. Both subtests fail with handler_accounts.go reverted to the previous head.
  • TestDeleteAccount_FKViolationRace_RequeryErrorFallsBack checks the re-query error still gives a 409, not a 500.

The existing _FKViolationRace_Returns409 and _NonFKError_StillReturns500 tests are unchanged and pass. ./internal/api/ and ./internal/mocks/ pass; go vet, golangci-lint (0 issues) and gocyclo -over 10 are clean.

That's #905's test: its staging helper runs every migration except 000127 first, so this PR's 000128 moves the schema past 127 and golang-migrate skips 000127. The fix is in #1060 (for #1059), and I'll merge main into this PR once it lands.

Independent delta review: code CLEAN at 29fc68a; merge blocked on red CI caused by the #905 test (fix: #1060)

Reviewer: fresh Claude agent (Sonnet 5.5, high effort), not the author. It reviewed the delta from the earlier CLEAN verdict at 6fd7d9f to 29fc68a and re-checked the head before reporting. Coordinator: claude-cc-reviewer.

Delta checks

  • 5163215 (merge of main): git merge-tree --write-tree 6fd7d9f7 8832fb07 gives 870d1df4, which equals 5163215b^{tree}. The merge has no extra edits.
  • 510ea41 (renumber): three pure renames, checked with git diff -M. The SQL body is unchanged except for the header comment. The test changes only its version constant and comments, and its down step now uses previousMigrationVersion(t, 128) (helpers_test.go:59). git grep executions_detach finds no stale 000127 reference. 000128 is unique and is the highest version.
  • 29fc68a (FK-violation path): on a 23503 error from DeleteCloudAccount, deleteAccount re-runs preflightAccountDelete once.
    • There is no loop or recursion.
    • It returns the client error from that call (a pending or active 409), or falls back to the pending 409.
    • It never reports success.
    • The account is already scoped by requireAccountAccess, so there is no cross-tenant leak.
    • Mutation probe: reverting handler_accounts.go makes both subtests of TestDeleteAccount_FKViolationRace_RequeriesPreflight fail.

Local verification (Docker integration, GOWORK=off)

  • TestMigration_ExecutionsDetachKeepsUpdatedAt passes all 5 subtests, including down.
  • go test -race ./internal/api/ passes when run with -timeout 40m.
  • go build ./... and go vet ./... are clean.
  • The full migrations suite hit the default 10-minute timeout in TestMigrations_DownAllRoundTrip. That is a timeout, not an assertion failure.

Blocking (gate): CI is red at this head

Integration Tests fails on TestMigration_NeverStartedLegacyRampsBecomeNew, which came in with #905 (expected new, got legacy). That test stages every migration except 000127. Once 000128 exists, the first migrate run already goes past version 127, so 000127 is never applied. This is #1059, and #1060 fixes it. Nothing in this PR causes it.

Path to merge

  1. Merge test(purchase): hold back later migrations when staging 000127 #1060.
  2. Re-run this PR's CI. The pull_request run tests the merge with current main.
  3. Merge this PR at 29fc68a once CI is green.

After that, #1022 needs to be 000129 (it already is at b0a2726).

Notes

  • CodeRabbit's one inline actionable on handler_accounts.go is addressed by 29fc68a. CodeRabbit's re-review was rate-limited, but it is optional under the gate, since the independent review and exact-revision verification cover the SHA.
  • The owner question about revocation_requested (2026-10-16T19:56) was marked non-blocking and is still unanswered.

stagedMigrations ran every migration but 000127 first, so any later
migration (#1020's 000128, #1022's 000129) moved the schema past 127 and
golang-migrate never applied it on the second run. Stage only migrations
that sort before 000127 and add it together with every later one.

Re-triggering CI: #1060 (the #1059 staging-test fix) merged as 22384a1. A close/reopen starts a fresh pull_request run against current main without touching the fork branch. The code verdict above stands at 29fc68a. (claude-cc-reviewer)

Merging at 29fc68a. The code verdict above holds. CI is green at this SHA after the reopen, which ran against main with #1060. Since that run, main has only gained #986 and #1035, both terraform/docs/scripts with no migrations, so no file overlaps this PR. Migration 000128 is the next free version. #1022 (000129) follows once its author merges main into it. (claude-cc-reviewer)

…n state (#1022)

* fix(scheduler): record partial multi-subscription sweeps in collection state

tolerateIncompleteSweep kept the rows of a partial sweep but recorded the
incompleteness only in a WARN log, so the freshness API (and therefore the
dashboard) rendered 1-of-10 subscription coverage exactly like full
coverage.

The helper now returns a sanitized *sweepGap (nil = complete) instead of a
bool. It is threaded through the per-account collectors, fanOutPerAccount,
the three provider collectors and collectAllProviders into a new
recommendations_state.last_collection_partial JSONB column (migration
000128), served as last_collection_partial on GET
/api/recommendations/freshness. The payload carries per-provider counts
(incomplete accounts, attempted/failed scopes, failed details) and a closed
set of reason categories; raw provider errors and subscription/project IDs
stay in the log, because the state row is global while accounts are
access-scoped.

UpsertRecommendations and ReplaceRecommendations reset the column, so the
next complete collection clears the marker. Hard failures are unchanged:
they still fail the provider and populate last_collection_error.

Tests now drive the partial/complete/hard-error cases for AWS, Azure and
GCP (ambient) plus AWS/GCP registered accounts, closing audit finding
A16-007's per-provider coverage gap.

Closes #87

* test(purchase): migrate to 000128 before the Azure pricing recollection upsert

UpsertRecommendations now also resets
recommendations_state.last_collection_partial (migration 000128, #87), so
the upsert failed on the v111 schema this test pinned before re-collecting.
Bump the pin to 128, following the test's existing precedent for 000111.

* fix(db): renumber recommendations-state-partial migration to 000129

#905 merged 000127 and #1020 moves to 000128, so this PR's migration
becomes 000129 (and still merges after #1020).
